Just because you have a section 8 voucher does not mean you are guaranteed to be able to rent a nice apartment. In the Austin area, no matter what you have heard, there is NO SUCH THING AS A NO CREDIT CHECK APARTMENT RENTAL with a section 8 voucher.

Some nice apartments WORK WITH BAD CREDIT, some work with criminal history, even a misdemeanor can get you denied (and you will LOSE your money) at many properties in Austin. I know where to go, but you have to be honest with me, or lose your money.
You are not allowed to pay OVER the amount on your voucher, if your housing voucher says you can have a 2 bedroom for $745 a month, you must find one that will accept section 8 (I know them all) and rent at $745 or less. If the rent is $746, your only option is to see if the apartments will accept $745, you can NOT pay the extra dollar your self.
If your voucher says you can only have a 2 bedroom, you can NOT get a 3 bedroom for the same price, you must stay in the price and size limit on your voucher. Sometimes you may be given a larger bedroom option, if that is the case your voucher will have two amounts on it, it may have a 1 bedroom size and price at the top of the page, then it may of the "larger two bedroom option" at the bottom of the page. Here is the tricky part, you will be allowed LESS money, that's right..LESS MONEY on the larger bedroom option, does that sound crazy? Is this a misprint you wonder? No, and there really is a good reason.
The Austin Housing Authority knows you are allowed to spend a certain percentage of your income towards your total housing cost, the Austin Housing Authority knows that if you choose the "larger bedroom option" that your utility bills will be higher, since you are only allowed to spend a certain percentage of your income on your housing, they reduce the amount of rent you are allowed to pay on the larger bedroom option since your utility bills will be more if you choose that option. Make sense? Call me to ask anything!

There is no way of knowing, many folks wait 2-3 years, PLEASE be sure the Austin housing authority always has your correct mailing address or you could be removed from the list.
Is there an alternative to section 8, I need a place!

I have section 8, can I transfer to the Austin Texas area?
Yes, as long has your current housing authority approves it and the Austin Housing authority also approves it. In many cases the Austin Housing Authority may accept you on the condition that they bill the housing authority you are moving from and they agree to pay it, Many housing authorities may do this.
